Extermination a la Turca
By now you must have heard about yesterday discovery of mass dog graves in Antalya. Its all over the news and the internet.
We will not go into details of the discovery.. it is all in the articles below. In any case I will summarize it in a few words:
Criminal municipalities go around collecting neutered dogs in a useless effort to clean up the streets before the tourist season starts. It is not only useless, it is a criminal one as those animals are protected by the Animal Welfare Law. Municipalities kill hundreds of dogs, bury them in so far away location, dogs are found by activist, pictures reach the media and the internet..
Turkey ends up looking yet again like the most barbaric place in the world, which is not. The fact that some very nasty people live here and happen to work in local councils does should not tarnish the image of the whole country, unfortunately, to a large extend, it does.
This is a beautiful country but everytime one of those criminal Mayors, like the Mayor of Beykoz Muharrem Ergul, or now the Mayor of Antalya decides to commit Mass Murder, the country as a whole ends up stained with blood.
Just yesterday I was having a conversation with the representative of one of the worlds largest animal welfare organizations. She was telling me that they were trying to focus on Turkey as a whole instead of focus on concrete cases. My reply to her was very simple.. concrete cases, like the atrocities committed in Beykoz by Muharrem Ergul must be won before spreading our attention to the big picture. We need to have
precedents in order to have those precedents applied in the rest of the municipalities.
Now.. I tell you what will happen here.. the Mayor of Antalya is going to come out in the news with a new polyester tie similar to the ones wearing by the Mayor of Beykoz, telling everybody that he is an animal
lover and that he has nothing to do with this. He may go as far as blaming this killings on to Chinese restaurants owners, believe it or not it has been done before… and there will always be mosquito-brained idiots like Rosemary Schulz in Germany, or Adile Pannicke, the infamous sociopath masquerading as animal protector, that will rush to the defense of those criminal mayors.
Nesrin Citirik from Dohayko wont say much this time. They after all orchestrated the events in Beykoz so they are now struggling to regain all the credibility lost over this issue. It will be very hard to overturn a decade of madness and paranoia.
Most of the members of our group are Istanbul based, but we are establishing a presence in the biggest cities in Turkey. We already have an Ankara network and will soon be launching individual networks in Izmir and Antalya. Our aim is to create Turkeys largest informal network of animal activists, but one that actually does and achieve something, a network that can be tapped to help animals in need.
A few days ago someone asked me: why should I take sides? I only care
for the animals.
The answer: as long as you dont take sides and take action nothing will happen and animals will continue dying buried in mass graves all across the nation.
So it is your call.

I sincerely hope that the Government of Turkey will implement new effective, compassionate and humane policies of dealing with overpopulation such as spay and neuter, responsible ownership, etc. Shame on Turkey for allowing such despicable and horrible crimes!

I agree that lower our arms is not the solution. That will only help those who practise mass murder as THE solution to what they believe to be their problem.
Seeing it in a close range perspective or as a big picture, the fact remains the same. Only if the actual responsibles for these actions are sentenced in court will this begin to end. And even so, there are always those who believe they can get away with it, and sometimes they do…
This is very sad, and I can only hope that Turkish people see the need to act, and join you in this.

Turkey´s Permanent Mission to the United Nations is in danger if Turkey continues these animalrights-violations like in Antalya,
don´t underestimate that where massgraves are found with dead straydogs in order to clean the streets for the touristseason this will
be interpreted in Europe as an absolute disgrace. Please, we feel ashamed for your country.
